Gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder (GERD)

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder is a common condition that affects up to 10% of the local population in Singapore. It occurs as a result of acid in the stomach refluxing up into the oesophagus. Patients with reflux typically report a burning sensation in the upper abdomen that goes up to the chest. However, some patients may have different symptoms such as upper abdominal discomfort or bloating. Chronic exposure to acid may lead to inflammation of the oesophagus (oesophagitis) and in some cases, may lead to a pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett oesophagus. These abnormalities can be detected during oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD).
